  • Identify impending respiratory failure and respiratory arrest

  • Describe appropriate initial settings for mechanical ventilation

  • Understand the difference between initial modes of ventilation and the weaning modes that follow

  • Understand which settings of mechanical ventilation affect PO2 vs PaCO2
